Today is Wednesday, right in the middle of week 12 in my Lincoln Marathon training plan, which is Hal Higdon Marathon 3, but adapted a little, of course, in true me style.
I think these posts have turned into the most boring accounts ever of my daily life. The truth is, I don't exactly have the energy and time to devote to making an amazing daily blog post. But this isn't called The Amazing 100-day Blog Streak. It's just a mediocre, and borderline horrible, 100-day blog streak. I will look back on this one day and think, Wow, I really shouldn't have even bothered. But I am bothering, because maybe I will also think But I'm glad I have all these great notes about how my training went.
Yesterday was a 6-mile easy run, which I took very, very easy, at an average pace of 11:26/mile. Back in the day I never ran that slow. Now, it just feels good to not try to run any faster. Mentally it's a little easier to get out for a run when you're tired when you have no specific pace to hit, but I think it may actually be harder physically to run that slow. I was too tired to speed up, but I think I would have found running at around 10:30/mile to be easier for an hour than 11:30 was for an hour and ten minutes. Maybe next time.
Today was supposed to be 45 minutes on the bike, but I haven't done that yet and it's time to get ready for work. I may or may not have plans tonight, but I just didn't feel like doing it. I still have 83 days until my goal race, and I'm only halfway through my training plan. I don't feel like I should be forcing workouts onto myself only to get burnt out faster. I already feel a little overwhelmed with working out 6 days a week.
If I don't go to dinner tonight, I will do the ride when I get home, which is when I enjoy working out more than in the morning, when I prefer quiet time to sit under a blanket and drink coffee. If I DO go out tonight and don't have time for a ride then I will do the ride on Sunday. Since I would otherwise not get any exercise today, I'm going to take shoes to work so I can take a walk around lunchtime. Better than nothing.
Since we're about halfway through, here's some reflections on what's working and what's not.
Running three times per week. Just, yes.
Biking for cross-training. I feel challenged, but not like it's killing me.
Podcast queues and audiobooks. Love having these ready to go. I look forward to popping in my earbuds and getting a workout done.
Getting other things done in the AM. Other things than running, but I have been able to straighten up the house, work on small projects, etc. Which gives me the afternoons mostly open to get in my workouts.
Biking in the AM. I just can rarely get myself to do it unless I absolutely have to.
AM runs if I don't HAVE to. It's just cold. I think during the summer this is a lot easier because afternoons are way too hot.
Pacing. I'm terrible at pacing myself. I rely on my Garmin to tell me my pace pretty much all the time. I'm rarely NOT too fast or too slow.
Food. I have improved a lot, but I have many moments of weakness. I just love food. I have been eating way more fruits and vegetables, cut way down on alcohol, cheese, meat, and oil. But I still like bread, muffins, cookies, and chocolate. Convenience foods tend to take the place of fresh foods when I'm in a hurry.
